Hosted by the 3GPP Standards Advancement Committee (TC801) of China Communications Standards Association (CCSA), together with the IMT-2020(5G) Promotion Group, the 3GPP R18 Wireless Symposium was successfully held in the city of Guiyang on June 2, 2021. More than 160 representatives from 20 independent 3GPP member units at home and abroad attended the meeting. At the opening ceremony, Gao Yin, 3GPP RAN3 Chairman from ZTE, and Dai Xizeng, 3GPP RAN4 Chairman from Huawei delivered remarks respectively. The meeting was presided over by Liu Xiaofeng, Director-level Engineer of China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) and Head of International Cooperation Subgroup of IMT-2020(5G) Promotion Group.
“5G-Advanced” was identified as the name of 5G evolution at the 3GPP PCG # 46/OP # 45 conference held in April this year, beginning with R18. According to the work plan of 3GPP, the R18 version will be approved as a project at the end of 2021 and is expected to be frozen in 2023. At the meeting, experts from Apple, CAICT, China Mobile, Radio and Television Sciences Research Institute, China Telecom, China Unicom, Ericsson, Huawei, Lenovo, MediaTek, Nokia, OPPO, Qualcomm, Samsung, Unisoc, Vivo, Xiaomi and ZTE, etc. respectively introduced their outlook on the wireless standards of 3GPP. Their introduction includes R18 push time prediction, MIMO enhancement, network slice access and support enhancement, mobility enhancement, location enhancement of low-power and high-precision positioning including industrial IOT scenario, UL enhancement, UE energy conservation, 5G smart grid communication infrastructure, 5G flexible timing system, AI, support for tactile and multimodal communication services, vehicle-based 5G relay and personal internet of things, etc.
The success of symposium helps domestic and foreign enterprises to exchange the expectation and understanding about R18 standards, and to promote the implementation of relevant programs. As an organizing partner of 3GPP, CCSA will actively encourage the engagement by the domestic enterprises and public institutions in the formulation of R18 and subsequent standards, and contribute wisdom and plans to the formulation of international standards for 5G evolution.
